Jaba the Frog

thesophie:mabelmoments:

A mouse looks out from the jaws of a huge voracious African bullfrog. These carnivorous amphibians have an aggressive temper and can jump 3.5 metres. The huge predatory frogs sit and wait for animals to pass by. They are stimulated by movement and will lunge at pretty much anything that comes within range, including this unlucky mouse. The same octopus...

The best way to spot an octopus on the reef is by looking out, rather than looking down.  Octopuses like to survey their territory, and when they’re resting they sit on the tops of ledges, outcroppings, etc. in order to see everything around them.  An octopus can see you coming from a long way away, so if you’re swimming along and just looking down into holes in the reef, the octopus’ll be long gone by the time you get there. The best way to find one is to swim slowly and look out at the highest points around you.  When an octopus sees you it’ll usually change color and drop down quickly, immediately giving away its position.  It’s kind of like hide-and-seek, except the octopuses don’t usually want to be found, and rather than laughing or losing gracefully, they just shoot water at you with their siphon. I found this guy in about 5 feet of water at Hanauma Bay yesterday trying to look like a rock.

The same octopus 30 seconds later...

This is the same octopus about 30 seconds later. One of the coolest things about the octopus is its ability to change color.  All Cephalopods can do this, but octopuses are by far the best at it.  They have 4 different tools which they use to change color and brightness, these are Chromatophores, Iridophores, Leucophores, and Bioluminescence, which can be activated as a chemical reaction within the octopus’ skin cells. In basic terms, the octopus possesses all the colors in its skin already.  To change, it reveals certain colors by unfolding microscopic sacks in its skin and keeping others tightly shut.  It’s a very complicated, detailed process that happens in several thousandths of a second. If you want the nitty gritty on it, some great info can be found in this PDF on The Cephalopod Page.

Some politicians don't want you to vote!

Voting, misunderstood

This year, fewer than 40% of voting age Americans will actually vote.

A serious glitch in self-marketing, I think.

If you don't vote because you're trying to teach politicians a lesson, you're tragically misguided in your strategy. The very politicians you're trying to send a message to don't want you to vote. Since 1960, voting turnouts in mid-term elections are down significantly, and there's one reason: because of TV advertising.

Political TV advertising is designed to do only one thing: suppress the turnout of the opponent's supporters. If the TV ads can turn you off enough not to vote ("they're all bums") then their strategy has succeeded.

I spread your idea because... #20

Seth's Blog...

I spread your idea because...

Ideas spread when people to choose to spread them. Here are some reasons why:

  1. I spread your idea because it makes me feel generous.
  2. ...because I feel smart alerting others to what I discovered.
  3. ...because I care about the outcome and want you (the creator of the idea) to succeed.
  4. ...because I have no choice. Every time I use your product, I spread the idea (Hotmail, iPad, a tattoo).
  5. ...because there's a financial benefit directly to me (Amazon affiliates, mlm).
  6. ...because it's funny and laughing alone is no fun.
  7. ...because I'm lonely and sharing an idea solves that problem, at least for a while.
  8. ...because I'm angry and I want to enlist others in my outrage (or in shutting you down).
  9. ...because both my friend and I will benefit if I share the idea (Groupon).
  10. ...because you asked me to, and it's hard to say no to you.
  11. ...because I can use the idea to introduce people to one another, and making a match is both fun in the short run and community-building.
  12. ...because your service works better if all my friends use it (email, Facebook).
  13. ...because if everyone knew this idea, I'd be happier.
  14. ...because your idea says something that I have trouble saying directly (AA, a blog post, a book).
  15. ...because I care about someone and this idea will make them happier or healthier.
  16. ...because it's fun to make another teen snicker about prurient stuff we're not supposed to see.
  17. ...because the tribe needs to know about this if we're going to avoid an external threat.
  18. ...because the tribe needs to know about this if we're going to maintain internal order.
  19. ...because it's my job.
  20. I spread your idea because I'm in awe of your art and the only way I can repay you is to share that art with others.

Alien Abduction Lamp By Lasse Klein

The Alien Abduction Lamp, a desk lamp in the form of a UFO that beams up a cow, is a wonderful product from designer Lasse Klein. A limited edition, the lamp features an UFO in solid cast metal with glow-in-the-dark aliens, the antenna functions as the on off switch, and it also has a third position for pulsing light and of course, the poor abducted cow.

Hey Rocky, watch me pull a rabbit out of my...

'Rocky and Bullwinkle' creator Alex Anderson has died

Alex Anderson, the cartoonist who created the famously pun-loving 1960s cartoon characters Rocket “Rocky” J. Squirrel and Bullwinkle J. Moose, has died. He was 90 and died Oct. 22 in Carmel, Calif. He had Alzheimer’s disease.

Many people, included me, have long thought that Jay Ward was responsible for the creation of Rocky and Bullwinkle, whose media-savvy adventures made them

a cult favorite for generations of kids who felt cooler for watching their show. But it was Anderson who created the clever squirrel and his dim-bulb moose pal; Ward was Anderson’s business partner early on, a strong influence on The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show, and did much to keep the show’s memory alive. Still, Anderson had to sue Ward’s heirs in the 1990s to regain full credit as creator of the characters.

Rocky and Bullwinkle first appeared on TV in 1959, and their escapades matching wits with their Russian enemies Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale were undisguised critiques of cold-war tension. William Conrad, later famous for starring in the TV series Cannon, did the voiceover narration. The show was constructed like an old movie cliffhanger, with breathless plugs to tune in for the next installment, which would have titles such as “Avalanche Is Better Than None, or Snow’s Your Old Man.”

Restore Sanity / Keep Fear Alive

The dueling rallies have merged into one. (Comedy Central)

Stewart will be in Washington next week to do episodes of Comedy Central's "The Daily Show," Obama is a scheduled guest for Wednesday, Oct. 27.

The President has already endorsed the rally -- kinda. At a roundtable discussion last month, Obama told residents of RIchmond, Va., he was "amused" by the idea of Stewart's Rally to Restore Sanity (which has since been merged with Stephen Colbert's March to Keep Fear Alive), adding that it was "really important" for people who expect common sense and courtesy in their daily interactions to have a rally where their voices can be heard, as the AP reported at the time.

Open Limerick To The Anti-Government Crowd
By Madeleine Begun Kane

You folks who cry out for less gov
Have lots of gov programs you love:
You think Medicare’s great
And you’d surely berate
Any pol who gave SS a shove.

You hate taxes for highways and schools,
But you don’t want your kids taught by fools.
And you’re quick to unload
When your bridges corrode.
Please wake up — don’t be Tea Party tools.

Tom Lehrer - The Masochism Tango

Helen and Margaret’s Pledge to America

Here is my pledge to you Margaret.  I hope you like it.

I pledge that I will actually read the Constitution before pledging to uphold it.  And I pledge that if I am too stupid to understand its intent,  I won’t become a politician.

I pledge not to start two wars, give tax breaks to millionaires, ruin the economy and then get mad when someone shows me the bill.

I pledge not to be a hypocrite or a Tea Party Republican – whichever comes first.

I pledge to remember that religious freedoms apply to all religions including the lack of a religion.  And I pledge to remember that no matter how much I believe in my religion, I will remember that my neighbor believes in his religion just as much.  And finally, I pledge that if I believe in my religion too much I will keep it to myself.

I pledge to stop calling Sarah Palin a stupid bitch when she finally admits that she is too stupid to run this country.  At that point I will simply call her a bitch and let the stupid speak for itself.

I pledge that I won’t hate gay people in public and then sleep with them in private.

I pledge to accept the fact that John McCain really can’t pull his head out of his ass at this point.  It’s in too deep.

I pledge not to be shocked when Rick Sanchez announces his new show on Fox News.

I pledge to remember that there are 6 billion people in the world and only 300 million of them live in the United States .  And with 300 million Americans to choose from, we can’t do better than John Boehner?  Really?

And Margaret, my dear, I pledge that I will vote on November 2.  I meant it.  Really.

Here is my pledge to you dear.

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

That about sums it up, dear.  That and Endust is as good if not better than Pledge.

Thanks

China: Nobel Peace Prize Winner - Liu Xiaobo

By Oiwan Lam

A few hours ago, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced its decision to award the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize to Liu Xiaobo for his long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China.

It is a moment of great joy for concerned Chinese citizens as Liu Xiaobo represents human rights activists' determination in struggling for the peaceful transformation of China's political system. He was arrested in June 2009 and sentenced to 11 years imprisonment under the charge of “inciting subversion of state power” afterCharter 08, a proposal for constitutional reform, was published.

The Jailed Nobel Peace Award Winners

However, the Chinese government, in response to the Nobel Committee's decision, claimed that [zh] Liu is a criminal who has been found guilty in a Chinese court and that the Committee's decision has violated the mission of the Nobel Peace Prize.

Iranian nuclear programme targeted by computer virus

Maryam Sinaiee, and Michael Theodoulou

  • Last Updated: September 27. 2010 12:32AM UAE / September 26. 2010 8:32PM GMT

TEHRAN // Iran revealed yesterday that a so-called computer worm – which experts say shows unprecedented ingenuity and is unique in its ability to seize control of industrial plants – has infected the personal computers of staff at its first nuclear power plant.

In the tech community and in the automation/manufacturing community we have been reading about this for weeks.  I wonder what aspect of it finally gave traction to the mainstream media to pay attention.  Could it be... nuclear programmes?  It is about flipping time.

The Face Behind The Book

Ha ha ha ho ho ho...

Ok, this just in... Mark Zuckerberg is the perfect 'Bad Boy' front man to be running FB.  He may well have come up with the idea (or borrowed/stolen it like another 'Bad Boy' wonder, perhaps your remember him, Bill G.)  But my point remains... Mark Z is the perfect diversionary carnival barker.  He is the guy who creates all the noise - that is essential for any real business to survive and grow.  All the while cadres of very smart, quiet people are running the FB machine.

So, lets all love/hate the loud guy out front.  And please remember to pay your admission at the door for the greatest show on earth.

Step right up...

Step right up, step right up, step right up,
Everyone's a winner, bargains galore
That's right, you too can be the proud owner
Of the quality goes in before the name goes on
One-tenth of a dollar, one-tenth of a dollar, we got service after sales
You need perfume? we got perfume, how 'bout an engagement ring?

Poverty

Income, Poverty and Health Insurance in the United States: 2009

The data presented here are from the Current Population Survey (CPS), 2010 Annual Social and Economic Supplement (ASEC), the source of official poverty estimates. The CPS ASEC is a sample survey of approximately 100,000 household nationwide. These data reflect conditions in calendar year 2009.

The official poverty rate in 2009 was 14.3 percent — up from 13.2 percent in 2008. This was the second statistically significant annual increase in the poverty rate since 2004.
In 2009, 43.6 million people were in poverty, up from 39.8 million in 2008 — the third consecutive annual increase in the number of people in poverty.
Between 2008 and 2009, the poverty rate increased for non-Hispanic Whites (from 8.6 percent to 9.4 percent), for Blacks (from 24.7 percent to 25.8 percent), and for Hispanics (from 23.2 percent to 25.3 percent). For Asians, the 2009 poverty rate (12.5 percent) was not statistically different from the 2008 poverty rate.1
The poverty rate in 2009 (14.3 percent) was the highest poverty rate since 1994 but was 8.1 percentage points lower than the poverty rate in 1959, the first year for which poverty estimates are available.
The number of people in poverty in 2009 (43.6 million) is the largest number in the 51 years for which poverty estimates have been published.
Between 2008 and 2009, the poverty rate increased for children under the age of 18 (from 19.0 percent to 20.7 percent) and people aged 18 to 64 (from 11.7 percent to 12.9 percent), but decreased for people aged 65 and older (from 9.7 percent to 8.9 percent). 2
Footnotes:

1 The poverty rate for Blacks was not statistically different from that of Hispanics.

2 Since unrelated individuals under 15 are excluded from the poverty universe, there are 460,000 fewer children in the poverty universe than in the total civilian noninstitutionalized population.

Great is as great does!

America will not regain its preeminent position on the world stage simply by saying that it is "Number 1".  Simply saying that one is great does not make it so... Being great on the other hand is irrefutable.

Great is as great does!  We must be 100% right 100% of the time.

Almost is not good enough.  Make-do-get-by is not good enough.  A country torn asunder is not good enough.

When we clean up our own house.  When we take care of _all_ of our own.  Then we will be great.

America, we have let bipartisan politics polymerize us.  Right now we are a country of Us and Them.

We must become one country of US.  United for the greater good.

Stop allowing derisive and disingenuous factions to split us apart.

America unite!

One America, complete, healthy and whole.

Les Paul - The early days

Senate Republicans Would Double The Deficit

Claiming again that 'trickle-down' economics work...

Senate Republicans are rolling out a plan to permanently extend an array of expiring tax breaks that would deprive the Treasury of more than $4 trillion over the next decade, nearly doubling projected deficits over that period unless dramatic spending cuts are made.

The Republican promise is that 'dramatic spending cuts' will be made but they refuse to say exactly which part of the pork belly will be incised.

Asked how McConnell would cover the cost of his proposal, the Tax Hike Prevention Act, aides noted that he has backed a bipartisan plan to freeze spending that would save an estimated $300 billion over the next decade - a drop in the bucket compared with his $4 trillion-plus plan.

For the rest of the cash, McConnell has said he will turn to the same place as Obama: a presidentially appointed, bipartisan deficit commission that is due to issue its report in December.

"This is not going to be your typical commission that's going to issue a report, sit on the shelf and gather dust," McConnell said last month on NBC's "Meet the Press." "We'll wait for their report. And I intend, if it's a responsible report that I can support, to encourage my members to support it."

So, McConnell is going to use the same mechanism that President Obama will use, a bipartisan deficit commission, "if it's a responsible report that I can support."  (Translation: if the bipartisan report meets McConnell's Republican agenda then he will support it.  If it doesn't then he will summarily dismiss it as a left leaning initiative.)

Senator McConnell with his use of perfect politician double-speak has supported Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthy calling their reinstitution "raising taxes" while offering no substantiative recourse but to follow the existing President's plan.

Ok, lets do away with big government...

I am convinced... we need to do away with meddlesome big government that has imposed so many limits on my personal freedom.  Ok, here goes...

Lets start with the Federal Food and Drug Administration.  I am positive that the pharmaceutical industry is fully capable of looking out for my best health interests.  Moreover I am equally sure that the food producers of this great nation would never do anything to jeopardize our food supplies.  (Anyway, what are a few rodent feces among friends.)

And here is another, The National Traffic Safety Board (NTSB).  So what if seat-belts save lives.  You should hear what they are up to next, seat-belts on school buses.  Can you believe that nonsense?  Them's prolly the same folks that says I cain't drink a beer while I am runnin' my BassMaster2000 to my favorite fishin' hole.  What kinda nonsense is that, cain't drink and fish?

And don't get me started on the Department of Education.  Puh-lease, dontcha think we know best what our kids learn in school.  We don't need no gov'ment beaur-o-crat telling me what my kid needs to be teached in school.  Worse 'n that, damned gov'ment don't need to be telling God fearing folks what they can or cain't teach in they own schools.

An' how 'bout the A-T-F an then they went and added the E.  Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and now Explosives.  What a royal pain in the bee-hind.  First of all ain't nobody should tell me how many and what kind of guns I should have.  It is my constitutional right to own guns... er, wait, the constitution is the power of the government, I mean, it is the government's responsibility to uphold the constitution.  Right?  Its actually the government that protects the rights of the people, people like me, right?

So I want some government...just not the parts that I don't agree with.  Yeah, thats it.  I want gov'ment to keep control of all them other folks that make me feel small or stupid or poor or disenfranchised or unhappy or disappointed that my candidate didn't win.  I want a gov'ment that keeps me safe from all those other folks and doesn't keep me from doing the kinds of things that I want to do.  'Cause gov'ment don't have no right to tell me what to do.

An' that's why I say lets do away with big gov'ment.
