Open "Hail Mary"
Observation: Hillary Clinton cannot leave the race when there is even the remotest chance she could become the "default" nominee of the Democrat party.
If Hillary dropped out now _and_ Barack Obama just happened to be "hit by a bus" who would be the party's candidate of choice? I think Michelle would make a great first woman president. (Much to Hillary's chagrin!)
Hillary is making the "Hail Mary" play for the Democratic nomination. One can only assume that she is either hoping Obama commits some sort of political suicide _or_ succumbs to some tragic accident.
Hillary has to call this last disparate play. She knows that if she doesn't acquire the nomination, by hook or by crook, then her power career will be over. Certainly she will be re-elected to represent the state of New York but her power will slip away when everyone she meets remembers her as a loser. And a poor loser at that.
