Slackware 12

Slackware ... this is just a taste...

- PCMCIA, CardBus, USB, IEE1394 (FireWire) and ACPI support. This
makes Slackware a great operating system for your laptop.

- The udev dynamic device management system for Linux 2.6.x.
This locates and configures most hardware automatically as it
is added (or removed) from the system, and creates the access
nodes in /dev. It also loads the kernel modules required by
sound cards and other hardware at boot time.

Slackware is the real deal. I have been using this distribution since 2003. everyone always talks about uburntu but that distro is for a total Linux newby. Slackware holds true to what Linux was meant to be. if you don't like the command line and you need a lot of hand holding, and your not smart enough to figure out the internals of your linux distribution i suggest you leave Slack alone and stick to your Uburntu distro.

  2. You are absolutely right...Slackware does offer the user access to and insight of the inner working of Linux.

Ironically as I have written in favor of Ubuntu I have had to move away from it ... and back to Slackware. Slack better suits my real world needs. Plus it allows me to be in control. Ubuntu might be great for desktop duties but Slack provides the workhorse environment that I need for critical systems.
